(1845) German and Dutch mechanical engineer and physicist Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen is born. He won the first Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901 for producing electromagnetic radiation in a wavelength range known as X-rays.

(1854) Italian physician and zoologist Giovanni Battista Grassi is born. He is remembered for being the first person to describe and establish the life cycle of Plasmodium falciparum, the malarial parasite.

(1915) Typhoid Mary is put in quarantine. She was the first healthy carrier of disease ever identified in the US.
