(1792) Estonian scientist and explorer Karl Ernst von Baer is born. He is known for discovering the mammalian egg cell and was the first person to view human ova.

(1896) American physician Philip Showalter Hench is born. He shared the 1950 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his co-discovery of cortisone (a human hormone) and its role in rheumatoid arthritis.

(1915) British biologist Peter Medawar is born. He is known for his work on transplant rejection and acquired immune tolerance.
