(1881) German organic chemist Hermann Staudinger is born. He received the 1953 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his discovery of macromolecules.

(1900) German social psychologist, psychoanalyst, and sociologist Erich Fromm is born. He wrote many works on human nature, ethics, and emotions.

(1907) Swiss-born Italian pharmacologist Daniel Bovet is born. He won the 1957 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering drugs that block the function of certain neurotransmitters.
