(1) (1801) German physiologist, comparative anatomist Johannes Peter Müller is born. One of his contributions was increasing understanding of the voice, speech and hearing.

(2) (1907) English chemist William Henry Perkin passes away. He is remembered for his accidental discovery of the first aniline dye, mauveine.

(3) (2005) English Anglican nurse Cicely Saunders passes away. She is best known for her work in the development of the hospice movement, which focuses on improving quality of life for patients with serious or terminal illnesses.
