(1) (1629) Dane polymath Caspar Bartholin the Elder passes away. He wrote Anatomicae Institutiones Corporis Humani, which was a standard textbook on the subject of anatomy for many years.

(2) (1896) German organic chemist August Kekulé passes away. He is known for his work on the structure of benzene.

(3) (1831) Baltic German pathologist and anatomist Arthur Böttcher is born. He is known for his anatomical investigations of the inner ear.
