Today In Medical History – February 9

(1871) American pathologist Howard Taylor Ricketts was born. The genus Rickettsia is named after him and includes bacteria that are passed to humans by ticks and lice.

(1910) French biochemist Jacques Monod was born. He shared the 1965 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering how the levels of proteins are controlled in cells.  

(1945) Japanese cell biologist Yoshinori Ohsumi was born. He won the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering the mechanisms behind autophagy, self-engulfing, and breakdown of a cell.
