(1) (1872) Brazilian physician, bacteriologist, and epidemiologist Oswaldo Cruz was born. He is most remembered for founding the Oswaldo Cruz Institute, currently one of the world’s main research institutions for public health.

(2) (1946) Spanish politician and pediatrician Xavier Trias is born. As a pediatrician, he investigated the diagnosis and treatment of metabolic diseases.

(3) (1880) Austrian physician and dermatologist Ferdinand Ritter von Hebra passes away. He is known for discovering the cause of scabies, an infectious skin disease.
