Today In Medical History – September 23

(1853) American physician William Stewart Halsted is born. He is remembered for introducing a number of surgeries, including radical mastectomy for breast cancer.

(1880) Scottish teacher, doctor, biologist John Boyd Orr is born. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work as the first Director-General of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and for his research in nutrition.

(1964) Head of Pathogen Genomics at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, Julian Parkhill, is born. His research groups has focused on analyzing the genomes of bacteria that are involved in the development of tuberculosis, plague, typhoid fever, and other diseases.
