(1913) American physicist and science writer/editor Phillip Abelson is born. Along with his contribution to the Manhattan Project and his role as the editor for the journal Science, he is known for his discoveries of fatty acids in ancient fossils.

(2015) American biologist and biophysicist Alexander Rich passes away. He and his team at MIT are for growing the first crystal structure of DNA.

(1903) German-born, British biologist Hans Kosterlitz is born. He is remembered for his work on endorphins.
