How old are Dr. Johnson and his son now?

Answer: Dr. Johnson is 51 and his son is 17 years old.
Assume that Dr. Johnson is X years old and his son is Y years old.
Then 3Y = X, and X – Y = 34.
Solving for X and Y, we get X = 51 and Y = 17.
