November 4:

(1) (1847) The anesthetic properties of chloroform were discovered by British physician James Young Simpson, who experimented with it by putting his friends to sleep.

(2) (1897) Indian botanist Janaki Ammal was born. She is remembered for collecting plants of medicinal value from the Kerala rain forests, and for her genetic studies on sugarcane and eggplants.

(3) (1960) The first-ever observation in non-human animals is conducted at the Kasakela Chimpanzee Community in Tanzania. Dr. Jane Goodall observes chimpanzees creating tools.
