Today In Medical History – March 7

(1849) American botanist and horticulturist Luther Burbank was born. He developed over 800 strains of plants, such as fruits, vegetables, grains, and flowers.

(1857) Austrian physician Julius Wagner-Jauregg was born. He is the only psychiatrist to win the  Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, which he did for his work on malaria as a treatment for syphilis-associated paralytic dementia.

(1876) The telephone, invented by Alexander Graham Bell, was granted a patent.
