(1796) German physician, botanist, and traveler Philipp Franz von Siebold was born. He is known for his study of plants and for introducing Western medicine to Japan.

(1890) English statistician and biologist Ronald Fisher was born. He is known for using mathematics to combine natural selection and Mendelian genetics, which created the modern evolutionary synthesis.

(1952) German medical doctor Karin Büttner-Janz was born. She won a gold medal in the Olympics for gymnastics and she has a patent for an artificial spine disk.
