(1822) English psychologist and statistician Francis Galton is born. He was the first to apply statistical methods to research and to collect information through surveys and questionnaires.

(1834) German biologist and naturalist Ernst Haeckel is born. He is known for discovering and describing thousands of new species.

(1848) Dutch botanist and geneticist Hugo de Vries is born. He is known for being the first to suggest the concept of genes.
