(1847) American physician, minister, and activist Anna Shaw was born. Along with being the leader of the women’s suffrage movement in the US, she was also a lecturer, giving speeches about curbing alcohol consumption.

(1876) Alexander Graham Bell applied for a patent for the telephone.

(1887) British evolutionary biologist Julian Huxley was born. He was a proponent of natural selection and his research included genetics and embryology.
