August 23:

(1) (1852) Bengali physician and philanthropist Radha Gobinda Kar is born. Along with being a prominent doctor, he is also known for founding the Calcutta School of Medicine.

(2) (1931) American microbiologist Hamilton Smith is born. He shared the 1978 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering type II restriction enzymes, proteins that cut DNA at specific recognition sites.

(3) (1944) Puerto Rican physician and public health administrator Antonia Novello is born. She was the 14th Surgeon General of the US and focused on women’s health, drinking, smoking and AIDS.
