August 24

(1) (1893) Israeli biochemist Haim Ernst Wertheimer is born. His research focused on medicine and he was known as the father in the field of fat metabolism.

(2) (1899) Belgian medical doctor and cell biologist Albert Claude is born. He shared the 1974 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering  the structural and functional organization of the cell, including the identification of cell components like the mitochondria, golgi apparatus and lysosomes.

(3) (1913) American physician, mountaineer and high-altitude investigator Charles Snead Houston is born. Along with climbing the K2 mountain, he is known for studying the impact of high altitudes on the body’s circulatory system.
