(1902) French microbiologist André Michel Lwoff passes away. He won the 1965 Nobel Prize in Medicine for discovering the mechanism that some viruses use to infect bacteria.

(1943) German biochemist Johann Deisenhofer is born. He shared the 1988 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for determining the first crystal structure of proteins involved in photosynthesis.

(1951) Australian physician Barry Marshall is born. He showed that the bacterium Helicobacter pylori is the cause of most peptic ulcers.
