(1) (1879) American virologist Francis Peyton Rous is born. He won the 1966 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his involvement in the discovery that some viruses can cause certain types of cancer.
(2) (1958) Dutch physician and ESA astronaut André Kuipers is born. He conducted many studies while on a space mission, one of which looked at plant growth in different light environments.
(3) (2004) New Zealand-born British physicist and molecular biologist Maurice Wilkins passes away. He is most known for his work on the structure of DNA.
