(1) (1866) German physician and botanist Philipp Franz von Siebold passed away. He focused his research on Japanese flora and fauna and is known for bringing Western medicine to Japan.
(2) (1911) Â French psychologist Alfred Binet passes away. He invented the first practical intelligence test, the Binet-Simon scale.
(3) (1955) Professor of nanotechnology at the University of Cambridge Mark Welland is born. He was part of the team that developed one of the first scanning tunneling microscopes.
