(1818) German physician and physiologist Emil du Bois-Reymond was born. He is remembered for discovering the nerve action potential, the way in which nerves communicate with one another and send signals.

(1867) Polish-French physicist and chemist Marie Curie was born. She is known for her work in radioactivity, and for being the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, and the only woman to win it twice.
