(1577) English priest, physician, and scholar Robert Burton was born. He wrote The Anatomy of Melancholy, a book that focused on the self and the possible maladies that melancholy was suspected of causing.

(1825) English naturalist and explorer Henry Walter Bates was born. He is known for giving the first scientific account of animal mimicry.

(1866) Ukrainian-American chemist and academic Moses Gomberg was born. He is known for discovering persistent radicals, which have been now linked to oxidative stress seen in diseases like cancer.
