The Curcumin and Multiple Sclerosis Rumour

Rumour: Curcumin benefits the treatment of multiple sclerosis.

Truth: This is true.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a degenerative disease that affects the central nervous system which includes the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves in the eyes. Curcumin is a chemical found in plants and it is the component in turmeric spice that gives turmeric its yellow colour. Curcumin is also used as a herbal supplement, in cosmetics, and in food colouring.

In Neurological Sciences, researchers from Pakistan and Saudi Arabia reviewed the known benefits of curcumin in relation to the treatment of MS. Researchers found that curcumin acts as an antioxidant by reducing inflammation and reducing cell death.
