(1876) German chemist Otto Diels is born. He shared the 1950 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for developing a process which could synthetically produce unsaturated cyclic compounds, which is important in the production of synthetic rubber and plastics.

(1918) American biochemist and pharmacologist Gertrude B. Elion is born. She shared the 1988 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for developing new drugs for a number of diseases.
