What injuries can road accidents cause?

Road accidents can lead to several serious injuries, some of which can be fatal.

Around 1.35 million people lose their lives to road accidents each year. With the growing number of vehicles on the road, these numbers are sure to increase.

Up to 50 million people suffer from non-fatal injuries due to road accidents. While minor car accidents only result in light injuries, major accidents can lead to permanent disability in some cases.

While everyone must drive safely, the chances of accidents persist.

Road accident injuries vary in severity and can mainly be classified as impact injuries and penetrating injuries. Impact injuries occur when a person comes into contact with any part of the car.

Meanwhile, penetrating injuries refer to scrapes or cuts caused by debris or broken glass flying inside the car.

To further classify, here are some of the most common injuries that occur due to vehicle crashes:

Soft Tissue Damage and Back Injuries

Soft tissue damage refers to injuries that affect connective tissue like tendons, muscles, and ligaments.

It is the most common type of injury and can have long-lasting consequences. A “whiplash” is a soft tissue injury in the neck and upper back.

Sudden neck movements caused by rear-end collisions usually result in whiplash injuries.

You can reduce your chances of severe whiplash by adjusting the headrest according to your head level. Pain from whiplash may not appear immediately after a crash, but it can be excruciating once it does.

Whiplash treatment often includes physical therapy, icing, medications, or a neck brace.

Fractures and Broken Bones

Auto collisions may expose your body to immense levels of force.

This extreme force frequently results in fractured bones in the legs, arms, or ribs. The type of bone fracture determines how quickly you can recover. Simple fractures and compound fractures are the two types of broken bones.

Simple bone fractures don’t cause open wounds and only require a cast and some treatment.

Compound bone fractures can pierce the skin and require surgery which can leave permanent scars. Broken bones are incredibly painful and take a lot of time to repair.

Head and Brain Trauma

All forms of head traumas are concerning.

In the event of a collision, sudden movement can cause a person’s head to hit any surface in the car. A severe head injury can result in brain tissue and blood vessels getting bruised or ruptured.

Concussions are the most common closed head injuries. Despite being harmful, these injuries are generally treatable. On the other hand, more severe collisions can result in a traumatic brain injury (TBIs).

TBIs may lead to long-term impairments in brain function if they are not given treatment.

How to Reduce the Severity of Injuries

Here are some measures you can take to minimize the chances of getting injured severely:

  • Always wear your seatbelt
  • Drive within the speed limit
  • Make sure your airbags are working correctly
  • Level the top of your headrest to the top of your head
  • Keep a check on the weather and road conditions
  • Stay focused on the road

What to Do in Case of a Car Accident?

Car accidents happen in an instant, and it is crucial to act fast in such cases.

If you have ended up in an accident or witnessed one happening, here is what you should do:

  • Calm yourself and try to assess the situation
  • Check yourself and any others involved for visible injuries
  • Call 911 immediately
  • Take photographs of the scene and talk to any witnesses.
  • Reach out to a car accident attorney like Dennis Hernandez Tampa to make a personal injury claim
  • Contact your car insurance company

Take note that certain injuries are not evident immediately following a vehicle collision.

Symptoms might develop in days, weeks, or even months after an accident. If you have been in a road accident, seek immediate medical attention at any sign of pain.
