(1)  (1686) Polish/Dutch physicist and engineer Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit is born. He was the inventor of the mercury thermometer and the Fahrenheit temperature scale.

(2) (1885) Lancashire-borne educational psychologist and psychoanalyst Susan Sutherland Isaacs is born. She studied child development and believed that the best way for children to learn and gain independence was through parent-guided play-time.

(3) (2004) North Korea bans cell phones.
