(1) (1881) Physician and 4th Prime Minister of Turkey Refik Saydam is born. As a medic in the Ottoman Empire, he created a medicine to cure typhus, diseases caused by Rickettsia bacteria.
(2) (1946) Turkish-American biochemist and molecular biologist Aziz Sancar is born. He shared the 2015 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his studies on DNA repair.
(3) (1965) German organic chemist Hermann Staudinger passes away. He is known for his discovery of ketenes, a group of molecules which are important intermediates in the production of antibiotics like penicillin.
