(1) (1879) Sex educator, writer, and nurse Margaret Sanger is born. She is responsible for establishing the first birth control clinic in the US, and creating organizations that evolved into the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
(2) (1924) Sierra Leonean academic, diplomat and physician Davidson Nicol is born. He was the first person to analyse the breakdown of insulin in the human body, which paved the way for the treatment of diabetes.
(3) (1936) Physician and pharmacologist Ferid Murad is born. He shared the 1998 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for demonstrating that nitroglycerin and related drugs, commonly used to treat symptoms of heart disease, work by releasing nitric oxide into the body, which relaxes smooth muscles.
