(1) (1851) U.S. Army physician Walter Reed is born. His team theorized and confirmed that yellow fever is transmitted by a particular mosquito species, rather than by direct contact.
(2) (1887) Croatian-Swiss scientist Leopold Ružička is born. His lab was able to successfully synthesize sex hormones (androsterone and testosterone), and also researched terpenes and steroids.
(3) (1966) German physician and television actress Maria Furtwängler-Burda is born. Along with acting in many German movies, she is also a physician who focuses on medical attention in third-world countries and women and children’s health.
