(1) (1846) American neurologist James Jackson Putnam is born. He conducted early investigative work on the basal ganglia and described Putnam’s acroparesthesia and Putnam-Dana syndrome.
(2) (1916) British veterinary surgeon and writer James Herriot is born. Along with being a surgeon, he was known for writing many books about animals and their owners.
(3) (1932) South African-born British retired cardiac surgeon Terence English is born. He is known for performing Britain’s first successful heart transplant, in 1979.
