(1) (1824) Baltic German physician and ophthalmologist Georg von Oettingen is born. He is known for being the first to provide a thorough explanation of amyloid degeneration of the eye’s conjunctiva (epithelial cells lining the inside of the eyelid).
(2) (1917) English physiologist and biophysicist Andrew Huxley is born. He shared the 1963 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his co-discovery of the mechanisms of action potentials, the propagation of nerve impulses from neuron to neuron in the nervous system.
(3) (1949) American physician, nurse, police officer, and public health administrator Richard Carmona is born. He is best known for his publication on the negative health effects of secondhand smoke, which encouraged indoor smoking bans.
