(1) (1932) British professor of epidemiology Alexander MacAra is born. He played a key role in the ban of smoking in public, introduced in 2007.
(2) (1940) American novelist and physicist Robin Cook is born. His novels, including “Shock” which addresses the ethical issues associated with stem cell therapy, have sold over 400 million copies worldwide.
(3) (1972) American chemist Edward Calvin Kendall passes away. Along with his work on the adrenal gland, he is remembered for successfully isolating thyroxine, a thyroid gland hormone.
