(1) (1860) German chemist and zymologist Eduard Buchner is born. He was awarded the 1907 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on fermentation, a process used today to make alcohol.
(2) (1918) American geneticist Edward B. Lewis is born. He is known for developing the complementation test, a test used to predict inherited traits in animals.
(3) (1938) British educationalist Alan Smithers is born. Along with his work in plant biology, he also focuses his time on education research and improving study protocols.
