June 27:

(1) (1869) German embryologist Hans Spemann is born. He won the 1935 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discovery of embryonic induction, the process by which embryonic cells begin to divide and become different tissues and organs.

(2) (1870) American zoologist Frank Rattray Lillie is born. He is known for his work in embryology and cell differentiation, the process where a cell becoming specialized to perform a specific role.

(3) (1925) American scientist Leonard Solomon Lerman is born. He is remembered for his work on DNA, such as how different molecules bind and interact with DNA.
