(1) (1854) Romanian physician, bacteriologist, academician and professor Victor Babeș is born. He is known for his work with bacteria and their influence on infectious diseases. He also studied tuberculosis, rabies, and leprosy.
(2) (1928) Professor, and head of the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the National University Hospital of Singapore, Shan Ratnam is born. He is known for his work with birth control and IVF for childless couples.
(3) (1934)  Polish and naturalized-French physicist and chemist Marie Curie passes away. She is remembered for her work in radiation and the development of the theory of radioactivity.
