(1) (1869)  Czech anatomist and physiologist Jan Purkyně passes away. He is best known for his discovery of Purkinje cells, large neurons with many branching dendrites found in the cerebellum.
(2) (1925) American physician and geneticist Baruch Samuel Blumberg is born. He shared the 1976 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work on the hepatitis B virus.
(3) (1930) Swedish ophthalmologist and optician Allvar Cullstrand passes away. His research focused on astigmatism and improving corrective lenses.
