(1738) French anatomist and surgeon Pierre-Joseph Desault was born. Known as one of the leading surgeons of France in his time, he developed a number of surgical instruments and introduced many improvements to surgical practices.

(1838) German neurologist and neuropsychiatrist Eduard Hitzig is born. He is known for studying the relationship between electricity and the brain.

(1892) American physician William P. Murphy was born. He shared the 1934 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for studying and determining a treatment for macrocytic anemia.
