(1854) British surgeon, geologist and botanist Henry B. Guppy is born. From 1876 to 1885, he worked as a surgeon for the royal navy.

(1911) Danish immunologist Niels Kaj Jerne is born. He shared the 1984 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work on the production of monoclonal antibodies and theories on the control of the immune system.

(1961) Kenyan-English biologist and academic Ketan J. Patel is born. His research mainly focuses on how cells repair the crosslinks between DNA.
