(1) (1836) Baltic German surgeon Ernst von Bergmann is born. He was a pioneer of aseptic surgery, the practise of sterile conditions while performing surgery.

(2) (1869) Bulgarian physician and activist Hristo Tatarchev is born. During the first World War, he was a physician for his regiment.

(3) (2012) American biologist and academic Elwood V. Jensen passes away. His research focused on hormones, like the role of estrogen receptors in breast cancer.
