(1884) German physician and biochemist Otto Fritz Meyerhof is born. He shared the 1922 the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his work on muscle metabolism.

(1916) American neuropsychologist and academic Benjamin Libet is born. He won the Virtual Nobel Prize in Psychology in 2003 for his research on consciousness and free will.

(1955) The polio vaccine is declared safe and effective for use.
