Today in Medical History – November 19th

(1816) The Royal University of Warsaw Foundation Act was signed, allowing the university to be built in Poland. Warsaw has various faculties contributing to the medical field, including treatment of breast cancer and gene folding discoveries.

(1912) George Emil Palade was born. He was known for his contributions to early cell biology, helping to discover important structures and functions in cells. He would receive the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1974 for his work.

(1924) Margaret Turner-Warwick was born. She was a pioneer of respiratory medicine and
contributed to understanding and treating lung diseases. Margaret was also the first woman to be president of the Royal College of Physicians, from 1989-1992.
