(1841) James Braid received a demonstration of animal magnetism, which leads him to pioneer hypnosis and hypnotherapy. While animal magnetism wasn’t real, his findings on hypnosis were, and remain an interesting but controversial topic in the medical field.

(1883) J. Marion Sims passed away. He was a surgical physician known for his contributions to women’s health care in the US. During his time he improved reproductive examinations and established the first hospital in New York City dedicated solely to women’s health care.

(1922) The US Supreme Court upheld that school districts can constitutionally exclude
unvaccinated students. This ruling decided that there did not have to be a public health
emergency or ongoing outbreak to require mandatory vaccinations.
