Rumour: Plasma glucose and fasting insulin levels can be effective biomarkers for pre-determining weight loss diets.
Truth:
This is true.
Although diet and exercise regimens have been designed to tackle obesity, they haven’t been successful in treating the obesity pandemic. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published a study that compiled three clinical trials to examine whether fasting plasma glucose and insulin could be the determinants of weight loss.
The clinical trials assessed normoglycemic, prediabetic, and diabetic individuals to assess whether fasting plasma glucose and fasting insulin levels had an effect on weight loss. The study found that participants with low fasting plasma glucose and high fasting insulin levels responded equally in the high fibre, high carbohydrate and low fat, and high fat and low carbohydrate diets. The study reveals that fasting plasma glucose and fasting insulin levels can be effective at pre-determining someone’s diet which can contribute to their weight loss success.
