Rumour: Vitamin supplements have beneficial effects in managing polycystic ovarian syndrome symptoms.
Truth: This is true. Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder that can cause hormonal imbalances. PCOS has the potential to cause short-term effects such as weight gain and irregular menstrual cycles, but can also result in long-term consequences such as heart disease, infertility, and diabetes. Studies are beginning to explore whether magnesium, calcium and vitamin D can influence PCOS.
A randomized controlled trial, published in Biological Trace Element Research, determined whether vitamin supplements (magnesium, zinc, calcium and vitamin D) were effective at balancing hormones in comparison to a controlled group. Since many women with PCOS experience infertility, weight gain, and rapid hair growth, this study illustrates vitamins and their ability to elicit positive effects with a woman that has PCOS.
