The Headache Rumour

Rumour: Vitamin D supplements may help alleviate chronic tension-type headaches.

Truth: This is true.

Low levels of Vitamin D have been attributed to headache disorders, including migraine and tension-type headaches that allude to chronic pain. A study published in Headache: The Journal of Head and Face Pain conducted a study to determine whether vitamin D levels were related to the participant’s experiences of chronic tension-type headaches (CTTH).

Results indicate that serum vitamin D levels were lower in CTTH patients in comparison to controls. They also found that this deficiency increased the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain, muscle weakness, and bone tenderness in comparison to the controls. Researchers concluded that low levels of vitamin D were associated with CTTH. This study illustrates how vitamin D supplementation may be beneficial for individuals hoping to alleviate chronic tension-type headaches.
