The development of intelligent software fitted to rolling walkers has the potential to monitor the movements of user’s, potentially increasing their independence by creating greater safety features.
Rolling walkers (rollators) make getting around independently a possibility for many elderly people. VTT Technical Research Centre in Finland has now improved the traditional, making it ‘smarter’. The prototype of the ‘smart rollator’ has sensors and software that are able to take measurements of daily use, such as rhythm, walking distances, walking duration, and speed. The information is used to monitor the user’s physical condition. The smart rollator provides the potential for monitoring alarms to sound an alert, for example, if the user were to fall. Installation of these kind of intelligent features to rolling walkers would increase independence afforded by these devices.
