Rumour: Frequent sexual intercourse improves memory function.
Truth: This is true.
Sexual intercourse is known to be beneficial for brain health. It can be considered a form of exercise that decreases stress and depression by stimulating the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that regulates mood. Previous research on animals has shown an association between increased sexual intercourse and improved memory. The association between sexual intercourse and brain health in humans is much more complex than animals.
A study published in the Archives of Sexual Behaviour investigated whether this association may exist for humans. Participants completed a memory test and a questionnaire to record specific information. The study found that there is a positive association between abstract word recognition and frequency of sexual intercourse. To read more about this study, click here.
