Rumour: Plant-based diets are associated with a lower risk of mortality.
Truth: This is true.
There is a lot of controversy surrounding meat, including negative health outcomes and impact on the environment. For this reason, many individuals are reducing the amount of meat in their diet or cutting it out completely to move to a plant-based diet.
A study published in the Journal of Nutrition by the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health uses long-term survey data to analyze how a fully vegetarian diet impacts mortality. Scientists created a plant-based diet index to measure the participants’ diets. Participants with a higher score have more plant foods in their diet. The results of the study suggest that plant-based diets are associated with a lower risk of mortality. To learn more about plant-based diets and their benefits, click here.
