Rumour: Pilates helps trained runners to improve running performance.
Truth: This is true.
Pilates is a combination of exercises very similar to yoga. Pilates improves flexibility, posture, and balance while simultaneously toning and strengthening muscles. Previous research suggests that pilates increases endurance in the legs.
The Public Library of Science published a Brazilian study that evaluates the effects of pilates on running performance. Researchers recruited trained runners to participate in this study. Runners were placed in two groups, a control group and a pilates group to compare running performances. The study found a noticeable increase in the running performance of individuals training with Pilates. To read more about this study, click here.
