Life Coaching 101: 4 Skills You Should Learn For This Career Path

People would love to grow professionally and personally to meet their potential.

While they may be aware of their potential, they may not know where to start or how to go about it. Because of such challenges, life coaching has become a very crucial aspect of people’s lives.

Life coaches are trained to help people reach their potential by giving them a sense of direction, motivation, and encouragement.

Life coaching is an umbrella term that refers to various skills, which cover business, spiritual, personal issues, and career. As a result, the industry has become a sought-after sector, with many people pursuing life coaching as a career and business path.

However, it’s not as simple as it may sound. There are numerous challenges, such as lacking the right skills and competition from already established life coaches.

So, if you want to pursue this career path, you need to learn the essential skills. Luckily, there are institutions offering life coaching courses to get you started. Additionally, you get a life coach certification upon completion of the course, increasing your credibility.

When pursuing this career, here are some important skills you should learn:

  1. Communication

Communication skills are a crucial part of a life coach. It helps you connect and understand your clients better so you can offer them solutions. If you can communicate with them clearly, clients also learn to trust you and be free with you.

However, communication isn’t just verbal. In fact, words can form the least aspect of communication. Therefore, it’s important to focus on the part of communication that matters, such as the non-verbal cues shown by the clients. (1)

One significant communication skill that can help you understand your client better is NLP or Neuro-linguistic Programming. People always communicate with their bodies through emotions, attitudes, and mindsets more than they do with other people.

So, as a life coach, having NLP skills will help you break down why a client has a certain feeling. For example, you can know why a client is tense or if they’re comfortable doing what they’ve been asked to do. (2)

Lastly, the NLP skills will help clients process their inner communications. By identifying the thing that gives them those feelings, clients can transform and feel better. (2)

  1. Listening

Being a better listener means you pay more attention to their verbal cues and observe their non-verbal cues. So, this goes without saying, to be a good life coach, you need to have good listening skills. Fortunately, you can hone this skill over time and become an empathetic listener and coach. (3)

You can start practicing your skills by listening to your family and friends without letting your emotions get in the way. When listening, take note of their tone variations and mannerisms. These insights help you get the details behind the conversation.

Consequently, you can react and express yourself accordingly, so the one who’s speaking will know that you understand and care for them. (3)

  1. Positive attitude

Life coaching means you’ll have to interact with people with diverse personalities, backgrounds, characters, and beliefs. So, there’s a chance that what they believe in isn’t what you believe in, and this could irk you.

However, as a life coach, you can’t judge them. Instead, take it as a learning opportunity to see things from a different perspective and understand them more. (3)

Once they feel that you’re judgmental or you’re biased, they’ll filter what they say to you or close down any available communication channel. As a life coach, you need to help people stop feeling inferior by focusing on the positive aspects of their lives.

However, this doesn’t mean you have to agree to everything they say. If you’re uncomfortable with their beliefs, you can choose not to work with them instead of judging them. (1)(3)

  1. Collaboration skills

Working as a life coach requires a lot of collaboration between you and the clients. When you work alone and try to push the client, then you may face more challenges. Let them guide their sessions as they know what they want to achieve. By encouraging them to be active participants, they’ll have control of their development and success by setting goals they can meet. (4)

You should never push clients to a path that they’re not comfortable with, even if you’re confident that it’s good. Instead, wait until they’re ready and understand the importance of this path. (3)

Conclusion

Being a life coach means you’ll help people meet their goals. This means you have to have excellent interpersonal skills to communicate, listen, collaborate and instill a positive attitude.

These skills are essential to any life coach, so learn and hone them when pursuing this career path.
